In 1973, on a ten day hike in the beautiful Shenandoah Mountains, I camped one night with two enthusiastic Appalachian Trail thru-hikers. They were generous enough to share some of their adventures with me. It sounded fun. At that moment I decided to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. Thirty-six years later, having recently retired, my dream became a reality. I didn’t see this as a life changing event. I just wanted to have fun, and did I ever! I found that I really enjoyed hiking – just putting one foot in front of the other. It took me through forests covered with blooming rhododendron, by blueberry bushes with warm, plump, delicious blueberries, to the top of mountains with views that seemed to go on forever, and across rivers where I felt like Rambo, gripping hand over hand on an overhead rope. It left me in absolutely top physical condition. It let me make friends with hikers of all ages as we backpacked 2,178 miles through fourteen states from Georgia to Maine. It left me with memories that will last a lifetime – watching a gorgeous sunset and the sky come alive with stars while camped on Cheoah Bald, being five feet from a large, smelly bear who was trying to take my food, my feet dangling over the edge of McAfee Knob as I watched a dazzling sunrise, seeing eyes sparkling like diamonds as they reflected the light of my headlamp on a night hike, getting battered by fierce weather on Mt. Washington, solving the fun puzzle that was the boulder filled Mahoosuc Notch, almost getting stomped by a moose, enjoying the beauty and tranquility of the Hundred-Mile Wilderness, and finishing atop awesome Mt. Katahdin with my brother. Hiking the Appalachian Trail turned out to be one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life. Have you ever taken a trip, had high expectations for it, and have it far exceed those expectations? That would be the best way to describe my thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. Wow! What an adventure!

Like others I have read more than a few books on hiking the AT. Well, I started many but finished four. This was my fourth.......after AWOL, Girl's Guide, and Bryson. Each book lends a different perspective and important insights. I love when a hiker talks about a place, and I think "yes, the other hiker said that too !"

As I said of the four books noted each has its own strengths. I liked this one because the hiker is about my age. I often wonder if the Olds can pull off a hike like this......well, Wingo did. I also liked it because he was fit and a happy hiker. ONE very helpful tip was to mention that he met many hikers who had no body fat and thus burned up needed muscle and had to abandon the hike - as a thin person this is a HUGE insight. I plan to eat lots and lots of protein AND carbs Wingo also mentions women he met on the trail. WOMEN - even older women - CAN DO THIS !

Also, and just as importantly, Wingo encounters some groups who give off bad vibes and he hikes on to avoid trouble. It is very important to understand that these situations may come up, and to have an intelligent response.

(ok actually Five books if we count Grandma Gatewood's Walk - but that was not a first hand account)

Appalachian Adventure Jim Hill 9781495489631 Books Reviews

Not the best AT book I've read but I really enjoyed it. Easy read, and flowed well. Wished there was more detail in some parts ... not sure if that was because of all that I had read before or would have felt the same if this was the first book I had ever read about the trail. Definitely would recommend it.
Wingo's memoir held my interest until the last page. He hiked his own hike and described it brilliantly. At times I could literally see what he was describing. I will read this again.
I really enjoyed both the author's books. I liked his attitude, his storytelling and his determination. Another thing I really appreciated was after introducing you to other hikers he would let you know they had successfully completed their thru hike (if they had). I hope he hikes the CDT so we can read about that adventure as well.
I loved reading Wingo's account of his life changing adventure on the AT! His story takes the reading through this experience and makes it seem like you are along with him for this exciting time in his life. Very well written and definitely worth the time to read. A real page turner that once started is very difficult to quit reading. Well done! I give this book an A plus, plus, plus rating!
I love this book 1. because the Author is a personal friend of mine, and 2 because it was so well written that I felt I was on the walk with Him, he captured the personalities of the people He met on the trail so well that one could feel as though You were meeting Them also and 3 Jim is not the type to write fiction where it does not belong, He wrote this story from His journals that He kept and from the great thoughts He had brought back from the Trail !!!!!!!!!!!!! He is an adventurist and He loves to walk He also wrote the book Are You Ready to hike The Pacific Crest Trail also a very very good book !!!!!!!!!!! Jim is gearing up for His next Hike He can't wait all I can say is that I really really hope a book is coming out from that Hike also !!!!!!!!!!!!!
This book was refreshing because it reads like a diary or journal. No drama or "personal journey". He just wanted to go on an adventure and have fun and states that right off..which I really liked and appreciated. The fact that a man in his 60s could thru hike the AT (and later the Pacific Crest) is impressive and inspiring, especially to me, who is just starting to backpack and is 51. Throughout the book I thought "yep, if he can do it, so can I!". Jim Hill is a person I'd love to meet and hike with. Very likeable, determined but seems fun as well. I hope he hikes the CDT and writes about it as well.

If there is any criticism it's that I would've liked to have had SOME background info on him just so I could relate to him in some way. I was halfway through the book before I knew he was from New Mexico. His sentences tended to be a bit short and choppy and disconnected. I guess that was part of the charm of the book but it was a bit distracting as well. However, it was a fun read and I read most of the book while kayak camping myself so it was almost like we were going on a journey and keeping each other company.
This is the 13th book I've read written by someone who has walked the trail, and I found it very BLAH! Other writers have gone into detail about the people they've met along the way, the towns then traveled through, the experiences they encountered, leaving me with memories of their walks. Once I started these other books, it was hard for me to put them down. This was just a boring walk on the Appalachian trail, leaving me with no memorable moments of his walk, and I started it 3 weeks ago, with no enthusiasm of picking it up to continue reading. I did pick it up yesterday, and again found it so boring and mundane that I closed it up and went on to doing something else. There are many excellent, exciting books out there about the Appalachian Trail experience, but this one is a real let-down.
